HURRICANE ERNESTO FILING EXTENSIONS
Joel A. Lee, CPA, Director of the Virgin Islands Bureau of Internal Revenue, reminds taxpayers who applied for the six-month automatic extension of time to file their income tax returns for tax year 2023 that the deadline to file the return has been extended to Monday, February 3, 2025 due to Hurricane Ernesto.
This extension for filing the 2023 income tax return is only for those taxpayers with valid extensions on file with the Bureau. Taxpayers are reminded that this extension is not for any payments that were due dates prior to storm, so there is no extension for the payment of the 2023 income tax obligations.
The February 3, 2025 extension also applies to estimated taxes that are due on January 15, 2025, and payroll taxes that are normally due on October 31, 2024 and January 31, 2025. While this extension is in place, the Bureau urges taxpayers to make the payments on the normal due dates where possible. "There is no question that this tax relief will place a significant burden on the Government's coffers, so we hope that many of our taxpayers are not affected by the storm and will be able to meet their normal obligations," stated Director Lee.
