VIBIR Cautions About Receiving Two Stimulus Checks

Joel A. Lee, Director of the Virgin Islands Bureau of Internal Revenue, informs taxpayers that he has been informed by the Internal Revenue Service, that hundreds of Virgin Islands residents have already received their stimulus checks directly from the IRS. Those taxpayers have either filed with the IRS erroneously or provided their tax information using the newly established IRS stimulus payment portals.

Each U. S. citizen is entitled to receive the $1200 stimulus check. However, no one is entitled to receive two or more of these checks. If you have received your stimulus check from the IRS, but file your tax returns in the VI, please contact the Bureau's offices to inform them so that a second check will not be sent to you.

If you receive two stimulus checks, please return the second payment immediately to the Bureau's offices. There will be no penalty or interest added to your check if you return it immediately. Failure to return the check to the Bureau can result in the imposition of interest and penalties, and possibly prosecution, if the circumstances are warranted.

Anyone with questions concerning the receipt of duplicate stimulus payments are asked to call Tamarah Parson -Smalls, Esq., at (340) 714-9310.
